Read across a row and East Haven lands between its two neighbors almost every time. The city to its west is older (39.6% of homes built before 1940), denser (22.9% in buildings of 20 or more units) and rented (only 28.4% owner-occupied). The town to its north is the opposite on each count: 9.7% pre-1940, 7.9% in large buildings, 81.3% owner-occupied, and a median home of 6.4 rooms against East Haven's 5.5. East Haven's own numbers, 17.0% pre-1940, 8.2% in large buildings, 74.6% owner-occupied and 5.5 rooms, sit in the middle, closer to North Haven on ownership and closer to the city on size.
Branford, which shares East Haven's longest border, is the neighbor it most resembles: 5.5 median rooms in both towns, and 69.5% owner-occupied against 74.6%. The difference lies in the housing types, with 55.9% of Branford homes detached against East Haven's 67.9%.
What the numbers mean for a visit
- Compact houses. A 5.5-room median means smaller detached houses where the kitchen and the main bathroom carry most of the work, and a visit runs shorter than in the larger houses to the north.
- Two-families and small buildings. With 67.9% of homes detached and 8.2% in large buildings, the remainder is in two-families, townhouses and small complexes. If your unit shares a staircase or an entry, say which parts are yours.
- Older houses. 17.0% of East Haven homes date from before 1940, and those carry plaster, radiators and painted trim that need hand work.
- Mid-century finishes. Many East Haven houses date from the 1950s and 1960s, and in the ones that still have their original tile, grout and floor cleaning does more for the look of a room than anything else.
- Seasonal homes. The Census counts 294 East Haven housing units as seasonal or occasional-use (margin of error 148), 2.4% of the town's 12,069 units. A place used only part of the year gets its first cleaning of the season scheduled before the owners return.
- Owners over renters. 8,499 of 11,394 households own, so most requests are for keeping a house up, not handing one back.
What East Haven homes usually need
- Weekly & biweekly cleaning
Right-sized for a 5.5-room house: a regular visit covers the whole home without taking the whole day.
- Floor, tile & grout cleaning
For the original bathrooms and kitchen floors in houses built around 1967, where the grout lines hold the years.
- Deep cleaning
A first visit or a seasonal reset, including for the 294 homes used only part of the year.
- Move-in & move-out cleaning
For the 2,895 renting households at lease end, and for owners handing a house to a buyer.
- Apartment & condo cleaning
For the 8.2% of homes in larger buildings and the units in two-families and small complexes.
People searching about East Haven type "house cleaning," "cleaning services" and "maid service" with the town's name, and some look for a cleaning company by name. All of it comes down to the same question, which is what a visit to a particular house would cost, and the answer starts on the pricing page and ends with the quote form.
A note on scale. East Haven's houses are smaller than North Haven's and North Branford's, and the quotes are usually smaller with them, but a compact house that has gone a long while without cleaning can take as long as a large one that is kept up. Frequency, not just floor area, sets the quote.
Moving, renting and short-term rentals in East Haven
2,895 of East Haven's 11,394 households rent. That is a real renting population, larger than North Haven's 1,790 and North Branford's 586, though nothing like the 39,217 renting households across the line in New Haven. Lease turnovers bring us into East Haven for move-out cleanings of empty units and move-in cleanings before the furniture arrives.
Short-term rentals
East Haven's own rules on short-term rentals are the town's to publish, and the Town of East Haven is where to ask before you list a room, a unit or a seasonal house for stays of 30 days or fewer. Two neighbors show how much can change at a town line. Branford, along East Haven's longest border, runs a Short-Term Residential Rental Ordinance (Chapter 199): annual registration, an online application that opened 1 March 2026, and permits that run 1 May through 30 April (town announcement, read 19 September 2026). New Haven, on the other side, licenses residential rental properties under Chapter 17, Article XIV of its code, amended 2 September 2025. Neither reaches an East Haven address. What does reach every Connecticut town is Public Act 24-143, section 7, which since 1 October 2024 has let a town adopt an ordinance regulating and licensing short-term rentals (Office of Legislative Research report 2026-R-0025, read 19 September 2026).
For hosts, Airbnb and vacation rental cleaning handles the reset between guests, timed to your checkout and check-in hours.
Deposits
When a tenancy in East Haven ends, CGS 47a-21(d)(2) sets the landlord's deadline at the later of 21 days after the end of the tenancy or 15 days after a written forwarding address arrives. By that day the landlord owes the full deposit with accrued interest, or the remainder with a written, itemized statement of damages. A cleaned, empty unit narrows what can appear on that statement; the landlord still writes it.
Common questions about house cleaning in East Haven
Do you clean two-family houses in East Haven?
Yes. Beyond the 67.9% of East Haven homes that are detached houses and the 8.2% in large buildings, a good share of the town lives in two-families, townhouses and small complexes. We clean one unit, or both floors of a two-family if you own the house and want it done together. Tell us which entry, staircase and basement areas belong to the unit so the quote covers exactly your space.
Is sales tax charged on house cleaning in East Haven?
Yes. Connecticut taxes janitorial services at 6.35% (CGS 12-408), and the regulation defining them, Sec. 12-407(2)(i)(Y)-1, applies whether the service is rendered on a scheduled, periodic basis or only on a single occasion. A biweekly visit and a one-time move-out cleaning are both taxed. A housekeeper on the household's own payroll falls outside the regulation; a cleaning company does not. East Haven has no local sales tax of its own.
How is an East Haven house cleaning quoted?
From bedrooms, bathrooms, how often you want us and how long it has been since the last thorough cleaning. East Haven's median home has 5.5 rooms, so many quotes are for compact houses, but the house that has not been cleaned in a year takes far longer than the one on a regular schedule. Add pets, a finished basement or a room that needs extra time, and we send a quote by text or email, usually the same day. The pricing page explains each factor.
Do you open seasonal homes in East Haven for the summer?
Yes. The Census counts 294 East Haven housing units as seasonal or occasional-use, and a house that has been shut since the fall needs one thorough cleaning before it is comfortable again. Book the visit for the days before you arrive, tell us how to get in and whether the water is on, and ask for a deep clean for that first visit; after that a lighter schedule through the summer keeps it ready.
Does East Haven regulate short-term rentals the way Branford does?
Branford's registration ordinance (Chapter 199) applies only to Branford. East Haven writes its own rules, and the town office is the place to confirm what, if anything, applies to your address before listing. State law has allowed every Connecticut town to adopt a short-term-rental ordinance since 1 October 2024, so the answer can change; check it each season rather than assuming last year's answer holds. Whatever the rule, we can take on the turnover cleaning once you are listed.
Do you clean the original tile and grout in older East Haven bathrooms?
Yes, and it is one of the services that makes the biggest visible difference in a house built around 1967, East Haven's median year. Regular visits keep tile surfaces clean; floor, tile and grout cleaning goes further, working the grout lines and the built-up film on floors and shower walls. Tell us what the tile is made of if you know, and point out any cracked or loose pieces so we can work around them.
