Counts and shares can be added across towns; medians cannot, so the county column leaves them out and the town range shows the spread instead. The numbers point to four kinds of home:
- City apartments. Bridgeport and Stamford together hold 60,627 of the county's 122,238 renter households, and 35.1% of Stamford homes sit in buildings of 20 or more units. That means apartment cleaning and lease-end move-outs.
- Very large houses. New Canaan, Weston and Westport all have a median of 9 or more rooms; Darien's is 8.4. Expect a longer first visit and tell us the number of bathrooms.
- Older coastal stock. 32.3% of Bridgeport homes, 27.4% in Darien and 25.6% in Greenwich were built before 1940, with the plaster, trim and old floors that need hand work.
- Homes kept for seasonal use. Greenwich counts 756 of them (margin ±272) and New Fairfield, on Candlewood Lake, 400 (±153). A house that sat empty needs a deep clean before its first weekend back.

Many people give a section name rather than the town. Cos Cob, Old Greenwich, Riverside and Byram are part of Greenwich; Southport is part of Fairfield; Saugatuck and Greens Farms are in Westport; Noroton and Tokeneke are in Darien; Sandy Hook is in Newtown; Stepney is in Monroe; Lordship is in Stratford; and Georgetown straddles Redding, Weston and Wilton. Sales tax on house cleaning in Connecticut
Connecticut taxes janitorial services at the state rate of 6.35%, and the state's regulation defines them as cleaning the inside or outside of buildings, structures or dwellings, one visit or a regular schedule (Regulations 12-407(2)(i)(Y)-1; General Statutes 12-408). There is no county or town add-on, so the rate is the same in Greenwich as in Shelton.
Two points differ from New York. The regulation names carpet and upholstery cleaning as janitorial work, so it is taxed here; and the service is taxed where the home is. A house in Greenwich pays 6.35%, while one across the line in Port Chester pays Westchester's 8.375%.
Short-term rental and rental rules in Fairfield County towns
Since 1 October 2024, state law lets each Connecticut town adopt an ordinance to regulate and license short-term rentals (Public Act 24-143, section 7). Town by town:

For long-term tenants, a Connecticut landlord has 21 days after the tenancy ends, or 15 days after getting a written forwarding address if that is later, to return the deposit or send an itemized list of damages (General Statutes 47a-21(d)(2)).
