The homes we clean in Stratford
| ACS 2020-2024 | Stratford | Shelton | Trumbull |
|---|---|---|---|
| Households owning their home | 81.6% | 76.5% | 89.7% |
| Single-family detached houses | 68.5% | 64.2% | 84.3% |
| Homes in 20-plus-unit buildings | 6.6% | 9.8% | 6.6% |
| Rooms per home, median | 5.8 | 6.2 | 6.9 |
| Year built, median | 1958 | 1977 | 1965 |
| Share built before 1940 | 20.2% | 10.8% | 9.7% |
Stratford has the oldest and the smallest homes of the three. Its median home has 5.8 rooms, 1.1 rooms fewer than Trumbull's 6.9, and it was built seven years before Trumbull's median and nineteen years before Shelton's. Milford, across the Housatonic and the town's longest border, comes closest to Stratford: its median home also has 5.8 rooms and 18.0% of its homes predate 1940, though its median year built is 1965. Bridgeport is the outlier in the other direction, with 32.3% of homes built before 1940 and a median of 4.7 rooms.
Inside the town the Census names three areas, and they differ more from each other than Stratford does from Milford. Lordship is 81.1% detached houses with a median year built of 1957, and 85.0% of its 1,751 households own. Oronoque is a different kind of place: only 31.1% of its homes are detached houses, the median home has 5.0 rooms, the median year built is 1975, and just 5.0% of its homes predate 1940, yet 83.3% of its 2,130 households own. That is the profile of an owner-occupied condominium community. Stratford Downtown is the oldest and densest of the three, with 24.7% of homes built before 1940, 27.5% in buildings of 20 or more units, and 69.8% of its 699 households owning.
How that shows up on cleaning day
- Less floor, more detail. A 5.8-room house is a shorter visit than a Trumbull house, but older surfaces take more time per room: painted baseboards and door casings, deep sills, radiators dusted by hand and floors that show every streak.
- Original tile. Bathrooms and kitchens from the 1950s often keep their ceramic tile. Grout lines hold soap film and hard water, and they come clean with scrubbing rather than a quick wipe. Cleaning brightens grout; it cannot replace grout that has cracked.
- Plaster and woodwork in the prewar fifth. Homes built before 1940 make up 20.2% of Stratford's stock. Plaster walls, built-in shelving and painted trim call for hand work and the right cloths, not spray and go.
- Basements and attics. Older detached houses usually have both. Tell us whether a finished basement, a laundry area or a stair to the attic is part of the job.
- One-level condos. In Oronoque the typical home has 5.0 rooms on one floor. Access, parking and the association's rules for outside workers decide how the visit starts.
What Stratford homes usually need
Older, smaller, mostly owned. Those facts favor the services that deal with surfaces that have been in use for decades, plus the plain regular visit that keeps a house from getting ahead of its owners.
- Floor, tile & grout cleaning
Ceramic tile, grout lines, tub surrounds, glass shower doors and hardwood floors. The service built for a bathroom that dates from the year the house did.
- Deep cleaning
The first visit in a Stratford house that has not been professionally cleaned in a while: baseboards, light fixtures, vent covers, cabinet fronts and the grease behind the stove.
- Weekly & biweekly cleaning
With 81.6% of households owning, most Stratford clients want the same rooms cleaned on a set day, week after week.
- Apartment & condo cleaning
For Oronoque, Downtown and the other units in larger buildings, sized to fewer rooms and timed to the building's rules.
- Move-in & move-out cleaning
Empty-home cleaning for the 3,796 renting households at lease end, and for sellers and buyers at a closing.
What people search for in Stratford is the general phrase: cleaning service, house cleaning and maid service, with the town's name added. Nobody types the name of a surface. That is why the first question on our quote form is about the home rather than the service: tell us bedrooms, bathrooms, the age of the house if you know it, and how often you want us, and we match the visit to it. The pricing page explains what moves a quote up or down.
Carpet fits here too. Wall-to-wall carpet laid over older floors, area rugs on hardwood and upholstered chairs in a house that has been lived in for decades all respond to hot water extraction, and the visit can be booked on its own or added to a deep cleaning.
Moving, renting and short-term rentals in Stratford
Stratford is mostly owned: 16,817 of its 20,613 households own, and 3,796 rent. The renting share is largest in the Downtown area, where 69.8% of households own, and smallest in Lordship, where 85.0% do. On the far side of the town's western line, Bridgeport counts 32,326 renting households. Lease changes in Stratford are therefore a steady trickle rather than a flood, and the empty-home cleaning that goes with them is booked by tenants before the walk-through and by landlords before the next lease starts.
Rules on short-term rentals, here and next door
Two of Stratford's four neighbors have written their own rules. Milford adopted Chapter 11, Article V of its city code, Short-Term Residential Rentals, in an ordinance dated 8 May 2026, which requires a city permit before a unit is listed (read 19 September 2026). The state's Office of Legislative Research, in report 2024-R-0044 of 15 February 2024 (read 19 September 2026), lists Bridgeport among the towns that handle short-term rentals through zoning. Neither rule crosses the Stratford line. For Stratford itself, what is published is the state framework: since 1 October 2024, Public Act 24-143, section 7, allows a town's legislative body to adopt an ordinance regulating and licensing short-term rentals (Office of Legislative Research report 2026-R-0025, 20 January 2026, read 19 September 2026). Whether Stratford has done so, and whether the town registers or inspects rental units, is a question for the Town of Stratford's zoning office and town clerk. Ask before you list, and read your condominium documents if the unit is in Oronoque or another association.
If you host, we clean the unit between guests as a short-term rental turnover, quoted from your check-out and check-in times.
The state deposit rule
When a Connecticut tenancy ends, the landlord's clock runs to the later of two deadlines: 21 days from the end of the tenancy, or 15 days from getting the tenant's forwarding address in writing. Any amount kept for damage must come with an itemized statement (Connecticut General Statutes Sec. 47a-21(d)(2), read 19 September 2026). We can make the unit clean; we cannot decide what the landlord deducts.
Common questions about house cleaning in Stratford
Our Stratford house still has its original bathroom tile. Can you get the grout clean?
Usually, yes. Grout in a bathroom from the 1950s is porous, and years of soap film and hard water sit in the lines. Our tile and grout cleaning scrubs the lines and the tile face, clears the soap scum from tub surrounds and glass doors, and lifts mineral film where it has not etched the surface. What it cannot do is fix grout that has cracked, crumbled or come loose, or put color back into grout that was never sealed and has stained through. Send a photo with your quote request if you want a clear read on what will come up.
Is there sales tax on house cleaning in Stratford, and on carpet cleaning too?
Both are taxed. The state regulation that defines janitorial services, Sec. 12-407(2)(i)(Y)-1, covers cleaning the interior of dwellings whether scheduled or one time, and it names carpet and upholstery cleaning as part of the same definition. CGS 12-408 sets the rate at 6.35%. There is no separate Stratford or Fairfield County sales tax, so a Stratford address pays the same rate as any other address in Connecticut, on a regular visit or a one-time job.
Do you clean condos in Oronoque?
Yes. Oronoque is the part of Stratford where condominiums dominate: the Census counts 2,130 households there, only 31.1% of homes are detached houses, the median home has 5.0 rooms, and 83.3% of households own their unit. A one-level condo of that size is a compact visit, with the kitchen and bathrooms carrying most of the time. Tell us the association's rules for outside workers, where we can park and whether a gate or a lockbox is involved, and we will fit the visit to them.
Do you clean homes in Lordship?
Yes. Lordship has 1,751 households, 81.1% of its homes are detached houses and its median home dates from 1957, so the work there is much like the rest of Stratford: full houses with older kitchens and baths. Homes near the water pick up more salt film on windows and more sand at the door, so window cleaning and a regular schedule that keeps the floors ahead of the grit are common requests. Ask for a quote the same way as anywhere else in town.
I am leaving a Stratford rental. When should the cleaning happen?
After the last box is out and before the landlord's walk-through. An empty unit is the only kind we can clean completely, because cabinets, closets, the oven and the floor under the furniture are all reachable. Give us the day the movers finish and the day of the inspection, and we will aim for the gap between them. Under Connecticut law the landlord then has 21 days from the end of the tenancy, or 15 days from your written forwarding address, whichever is later, to return the deposit with an itemized statement of any deductions.
Do you clean in Milford, Shelton and the other towns next to Stratford?
Yes. Stratford touches four towns, Bridgeport, Milford, Shelton and Trumbull, and each has its own page, linked below. Milford is in New Haven County and the other three in Fairfield County; both counties are in our service area. One thing to know if you also own or rent in Milford: that city now requires a permit before a short-term rental is listed, and the requirement stops at the Milford line.
