That adds up to three markets:

  • Old city housing. In Poughkeepsie city only 38.8% of households own and 27.0% of homes are detached houses; Beacon's median home dates from 1957. Expect plaster dust, radiators and stairs, and plan move-out cleaning around lease dates.
  • Newer, bigger houses in the south and east. East Fishkill's median home dates from 1980 with 7.1 rooms, LaGrange's from 1974 with 7.1, Beekman's from 1985. More rooms mean a longer first clean, then shorter regular visits.
  • Weekend and seasonal homes. The county counts 2,843 homes held for seasonal use (margin ±374); Rhinebeck has 287 (±121), Washington 266 (±123) and Stanford 237 (±110). Those houses need opening cleans and, when rented, turnovers between guests.

Fishkill is the town that breaks the pattern: only 39.3% of its homes are detached houses and the median is 5.4 rooms.

Sales tax on house cleaning in Dutchess

The combined state and county rate in Dutchess is 8.125%, a quarter point below Westchester and Putnam's 8.375% (Publication 718, effective 1 March 2025). The publication lists no separate city rate in Dutchess, so Beacon and Poughkeepsie use the same 8.125%. Interior house cleaning is taxable in New York (TSB-M-91(4)S); carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning is exempt (Tax Bulletin ST-740).

Common questions about house cleaning across Dutchess County

Do you clean short-term rentals between guests across Dutchess County?

Yes. A turnover resets the whole rental for the next stay: kitchen, bathrooms, floors, beds made with your linens and trash dealt with. Several Dutchess towns set trash rules for rentals, such as bins out only the night before pickup in Wappinger and East Fishkill, so tell us your pickup days, where the bins live, your check-out and check-in times and how we get in. See vacation rental cleaning.

What sales tax applies to cleaning across Dutchess County?

8.125%, the combined state and county rate, in every town and in both cities. That is lower than the 8.375% in Putnam and most of Westchester. If your visit includes carpet or upholstery cleaning, that part is exempt in New York, so ask us to list it on its own line.

Do you clean older homes across Dutchess County, such as in Poughkeepsie and Beacon?

Yes, and we plan them differently. In the city of Poughkeepsie 40.9% of homes, and in Beacon 32.0%, were built before 1940. Old plaster sheds fine dust, radiators trap it, and original wood floors and painted trim need a gentle hand. Tell us about any surface you worry about and whether the home has steep or narrow stairs, and we will allow the time for it.

Which hamlets are covered across Dutchess County?

Every hamlet is part of a town we serve. A few that people ask about: Hopewell Junction is in East Fishkill, Lagrangeville is in LaGrange, Millbrook is in Washington, Millerton is in North East, Staatsburg is in Hyde Park, Tivoli is in Red Hook, and Wappingers Falls sits across Wappinger and Poughkeepsie towns. Neighbors in Putnam County are covered too.
